Matt Mower went through some hoops to close down his Facebook account. I’m not sure I understand his full rationale; I can guess. Take it as an early warning signal that Facebook, LinkedIn etc really don’t give use the control we require.

Great set of points in this article. Made me think less of Twitter as a “Presence” engine and more about Twitter as short format news. Article notes that twitter could upend a Reuters or Bloomberg. Think one-liners. Think Press Releases…

Marc Andreessen starts tracking “****” words on Twitter and outs a few culprits on his blog. Remember what you tweet may just stay out there! I’ve found Twitter “track” is worth trying out.

Luis Suarez has been blogging a podcast between Dave Snowden and Jon Husband. This strikes me as a smart exercise and too easy to ignore. It gets to the salient points that we may otherwise miss; for most podcasts there is no formal transcript.

I’ve now seen at least 4 confirmed reports from colleagues that were using the SkypeIn service who were notified that their number is changing. Skype’s answer is inadequate. Too bad the Skype Journal guys will not say it loud enough. This is bad business

What’s the point in haveing a Heartbeat blog if you aren’t going to take comments. The answer is weak, and this blog doesn’t even appear on the home page. Skype —- just another company that wants to hide the bad news. How many are actually affected?

More details on the SkypeIn number screw-up. It’s always in the details. Skype didn’t want to be transparent. This exchange suggests that some may not even recognize they have a problem till the line goes dead.

Note to self to check out crowdvine a site which John Tropea points to. Not sure how this differs from Ning etc. May be worth checking out. Note Bloggers and Networkers will want to plug in what they already do with the minimum fuss.

Why doesn’t Twitter tell us exactly how many users are active etc. Watching Skype growth simply encouraged users to use it more and advocate it harder. Tweet, twitterring, etc is all a verb. They are there. The blogosphere will make the numbers a story.

Hi Stuart.
Having been involved in an effort to sell privacy protection to individuals and vendors I think I am quite sensitive to the issues so maybe it’s worth treating me as an early warning indicator.
What Facebook and others are doing has made me very uncomfortable; they’re changing the deal and in ways I don’t like. I think there were ways to implement Beacon and Social Ads that, while they would have followed a less sharp revenue growth curve, would not have rung alarm bells for me. They choose not to go that way. More here:

I think Facebook and the rest have gotten an overinflated view of their importance to us. What, after all, do they actually do? They run a website with some gadgets on it. They’re good at marketing. Nothing about their site is particularly rocket science or even innovative. They were just the best at packaging those features for a generation that was receptive to the idea of social networking sites.
But, as with blogging, I believe we don’t need large corporations to do social networking and, in bringing the network back under our control, we gain benefits and protection from interests other than our own.
Anyway… just a little more perspective on my views.
